Scottish Borders Council and MBHA launch new Short Breaks service in Peebles

An exciting new development at Tweedbridge Court in Peebles is due to open in September. Margaret Blackwood Housing Association, in partnership with Scottish Borders Council Social Work Services, is making a two-bedroom flat available which has been specially designed and equipped for a person living with disabilities.

The flat is wheelchair accessible and open plan. It has two shower rooms, one with a wet floor. A kitchen has been designed with standard and wheelchair accessible units, and a second bedroom for the use of carers if required. Tweedbridge Court is close to the town and its amenities.

The service will enable people to access a short break facility in a delightful riverside location in interesting area with appropriate support provided. It will also help carers to have a break from their caring responsibilities in the knowledge that their family member has good support and is able to take advantage of the range of facilities that Peebles offers.

This is a very individualised type of service and people’s support will vary according to their needs. Director of Social Work, Andrew Lowe said “MBHA have done an excellent job and we are delighted to be able to offer a fully equipped, modern short break service here in such a high value holiday location.”

Councillor David Raw, Executive Member for Social Work said “The Council is also developing a new short breaks service in Duns for people living in the eastern Borders and we are very grateful to MBHA for an excellent partnership development here in Peebles.”

Jock Welsh, Margaret Blackwood’s Support Services Director, told us “When Social Work Services suggested the short stay flat, it made perfect sense for us, enabling us to make excellent use of an existing resource. We have been able to quickly convert two small apartments into a larger two-bedroom property which has been designed to be very adaptable, suiting the needs of a wide spectrum of disabled people.”
