Adaptations

Kitchen Adaptation

An adaptation is an alteration, in some form, to your home. This could be additional equipment, fixtures or fittings, alterations to your kitchen, bathroom and any other area of your home to make it easier for you or a member of your household to carry out personal tasks.

We have two categories of Adaptations:

  • Major adaptations (e.g. wet floor/level access showers, clos-o-mats, automatic door openers, door entry systems)
  • Minor adaptations (e.g. grab rails, window/door lever handles, lever taps, banisters)

Who can benefit?

If you, or someone in your household, are older, disabled or less able to manage personal and domestic tasks, or if your carer's health is at risk from assisting you, then an adaptation may be of benefit.

Who funds an Adaptation?

Who funds the work depends on the equipment and alterations required within your home. Funding may be from the local health authority or the local social work department. Blackwood Homes receives an annual grant from the Scottish Government's Housing and Regeneration Directorate.

There is no charge for minor adaptations. Some major adaptations may have an ongoing maintenance or rental charge which will be included as part of your monthly service/rental charge. We will discuss this with you in advance if there is any charge. Here are some examples of items likely to carry the service and maintenance charge:

  • Window openers
  • Clos-o-mats
  • Automatic door openers
  • Track and hoists
  • Hobs and ovens
  • Door entry systems

Who should you contact about an Adaptation?

For minor adaptations, we ask you to complete our Self Assessment Form.

For major adaptations, you need to approach your local area social work office or occupational therapist. They will assess your needs and help you to contact the appropriate organisation responsible for the adaptation required. If you receive help from a community nurse, they may be able to obtain items of equipment.

At any time, if you require further information or assistance, please contact our office on 0845 712 5865 or email feedback@mbha.org.uk.

What is a Self Assessment?

Blackwood Homes offers Self Assessment for basic minor adaptations. The Self Assessment involves YOU identifying daily activities where you may be struggling to manage or feel unsafe and think that a minor adaptation may be the solution. Our aim is to provide a more speedy service for minor adaptations through your completion of our form, avoiding the need to wait for an Occupational Therapist visit.

If your needs exceed this, please contact your local social work department for a full Occupational Therapist assessment.

If you are having difficulty completing the form yourself then please contact your Support Worker, Care Manager or a Blackwood employee.
